Women dominant internet users

24/08/2007 Women are now spending more time online than men, according to research conducted by Ofcom.

Communicating with friends is one of the key uses in this so-called "feminisation" of the internet with social networking sites taking the lead, reports the Times.

Adam Baum, from the Gartner Group, told the paper: "I have no doubt that the reason behind the swing [in the direction of women] is the rise of social networking sites.

"The time people spend on sites such as MySpace, Bebo and Facebook is by some magnitude higher than on 'traditional' websites and these new sites, which allow people to talk to each other, engage in friendships and share tastes, appeals to women."

The findings serve to turn stereotypes of male dominance in the information technology world on their head, as women employ IT not only in the workplace but also in their spare time.

Sharon Bailey, general manager at MSN in the UK, said: "If learning how to use the technology was ever a barrier to women getting online, it isn't today and, frankly, there are more interesting things for women to do on the web than in the past - especially when it comes to socialising."
