Women in business 'need leadership'

29/09/2009 Women in business 'need leadership'There needs to be 'willing leadership' from the male majority in order to get more women into business jobs.

That is the view of Why Women Mean Business author Alison Maitland, who has questioned why more females are not in the top jobs at corporations around the world.

A new Financial Times countdown has listed the top 50 women in world business, with PepsiCo chair and chief executive Indra Nooyi at number one.

Ms Maitland wrote for the newspaper that to get more people in Ms Nooyi's position, there needs to be widespread attitude changes.

She commented: "Our report celebrates women business leaders around the world. The fact is that their numbers remain tiny.

"A small group of women chief executives - or women on boards - cannot be asked to carry all the weight. Change requires willing leadership from the male majority."

Avon chair and chief executive Andrea Jung came second in the list of role models in business.
