Women in technology urged to update security software

20/10/2009 Women in technology urged to update security...IT workers and users need to distrust websites they are unfamiliar with, an information security firm has warned.

According to 7Safe, IT users should not trust websites they have not heard of and ensure they have an updated malware scanner in place.

Although there are no guarantees that the program will detect any malicious software, it is better for the user to have it installed, the company explained.

Jens Kirschner, training manager for computer forensics courses, at 7Safe, said: "So it's a level of preparation on the malware scanning front, and also having a safe level of mistrust about what you find on the internet - don't trust anything you're not familiar with.

"The majority [of websites are] fine, but it's important to realise there are some severely black sheep among the rest."

A recent report from security software provider Symantec showed that 250 fake programs were being sold during October with prices reaching £60.

The research showed that they were sold via nearly 200,000 different websites.
