15/02/2012 Women show their worth as main breadwinnersThe days of women staying at home while the men go out to work could soon be over as a growing number of households are seeing women become the main breadwinner.

Between 1969 and 2008, figures show that the number of women who earn more than their male partner rose from five per cent to 25 per cent and according to the Office for Economic Cooperation and Development, women will soon make up more than 70 per cent of all graduates with higher earning potential.

This is particularly the case for women in technology careers.

While couples will need to reassess traditional gender roles, employers will also have to adapt to this trend, argued Dr Suzanne Doyle-Morris, director of FemaleBreadwinners.com.

"If they want to recruit and develop university-educated talent," she explained, "they will have to do much more to make themselves attractive to women."

She added that men will also need to request flexible working from their employers for the practice to move away from being a female workers-only issue.

Women wanting to learn more about this shift in gender roles can attend a masterclass hosted by Women in Technology on March 9th titled Female Breadwinners: Managing A Successful Career and Relationship as the Main Earner.
