Workers 'should be helped during heatwave'

02/07/2009 Workers 'should be helped during heatwave'Firms must do their best to prevent their employees getting "overheated", the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has said.

The union group urged employers to consider different ways of keeping staff cool during the heatwave, which has now reached its fourth day.

London and the south-east of England are the worst-affected areas, which temperatures hitting 30 degrees.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, has called on organisations to relax rigid dress codes as the mercury rises and permit workers to wear more comfortable attire.

"Allowing employees to dress down in the current heatwave will prevent them from collapsing at their desks, and could also save companies money as they are able to turn down the air con a notch," he said.

"Clearly vest tops and shorts are not suitable attire for all front line staff, but those not dealing with the public should be able to discard their tights, ties and suits and opt for more summery clothing this week."

The Met Office has raised its heatwave warning to level three.
