Young people urged to consider apprenticeships

17/08/2011 Young people urged to consider apprenticeshipsYoung people considering an alternative to university have been encouraged to undertake an apprenticeship to learn new skills and pursue their career through another route. 

According to Denise Taylor, career psychologist with amazingpeople.co.uk, businesses value the skills learned during an apprenticeship as they are relevant to the job.

"It's all about thinking 'what do I want to do?" she asked. "Do I want to get a job in web design because that's what I've always wanted to do?"

"What can you do that will enable you to get a portfolio together, just like artists do so that you could go along to future employers and say 'well I've been working doing such and such, but whilst I've been there, I've set up a website for the local tennis club, I've done this for my father's business'," she added.

Gaining skills through an apprenticeship could be a viable option for people, particularly when university fees are set to increase next year.

What's more, technology firms like Microsoft have pledged to increase the number of placements available. Its Britain Works programme has already helped 250,000 people.
