Help us to inspire the next generation of female technologists!
e-skills UK launches
Girls in IT campaign
and is looking for your support. The Women in Technology community will be only too aware of the gender imbalance within our profession. A mere 17% of the total IT professional workforce is female and unless urgent action is taken, this problem will continue to worsen with the number of girls opting to study IT after GCSE or embark on a technology career falling year on year. e-skills UK research shows that the IT professional workforce needs over half a million new entrants over the next five years to keep up with demand. So for almost half the population to be rejecting the prospect of a career in IT represents a major threat to the UK’s future prosperity. Now, more than ever, the sector needs to be attracting the best and the brightest young talent that the country has to offer – and that means girls in particular, who we know consistently outperform boys at school in IT related subjects. e-skills UK knows that bringing inspirational role models into contact with female students gives girls a better understanding of what working in technology really involves. Nothing works better to dispel those negative stereotypes of IT departments full of geeky men and nerdy boys. This is why e-skills UK is launching the Girls in IT campaign, working with key figures from the industry who are passionate about encouraging more girls into IT. Over the coming months, e-skills UK will be reaching out to individuals, companies and networks through our campaign, asking them to collaborate on addressing an issue that no one organisation can solve by itself. The aim of the Girls in IT campaign is to raise awareness among IT employers and the technology community about the importance of engaging girls in IT and to channel their enthusiasm into impactful activities that will make a measurable difference to the way that girls perceive IT careers. We are looking to unite the women in the IT community behind this initiative, opening girls’ eyes to an exciting and rewarding career they may never have considered before. Sign our pledge to demonstrate your commitment to the campaign! By signing the pledge you can show your support and also download an action pack detailing what you can do to get involved in the
Girls in IT campaign

YPG Career Advancement Programme – call for panellists for an event in November, London
The
BCS' Young Professionals Group
(YPG) has nearly 24,000 members and is dedicated to supporting and representing those in the foundation years of their career. The idea of the YPG Career Advancement Programme (YPG CAP) came about with the realisation that the skills that university equips students with are by and large academic. These, however, are only a part of the equation when it comes to being successful and fulfilled in professional life. Soft skills and, more importantly, early understanding of how to plan and steer one’s career, should also be accounted for. The YPG CAP adopts a holistic approach to personal and professional orientation services targeting final year students and recent graduates in IT and the outcome of the programme would be the delegates’ personal and professional confidence leading to a generally more fulfilled life. The YPG CAP is planned as a recurring series of seminars / workshops spanning one year period and they are currently looking for panellists for the session called "Who am I to be?" which will run in late November (date TBC) and covers IT industry trends and employment options stemming from those and a discussion around the range of roles available within IT / computing. They would like panellists working in software development, architecture, applied research, management and consulting to talk about their roles and the skills needed to be successful in them. If this is of interest to you, please contact Serge Kovela on
S.Kovela@kingston.ac.uk

Visit our Schools and Colleges Week, Monday 18th to Friday 22nd October 2010
Would you be interested in taking part in Visit the Schools and Colleges Week, a national campaign based on a simple idea - all across England, head teachers and principals are inviting senior people from the private, public and third sectors to see first-hand how employers can help give young people a better start in life. Over 500 employers, including 80 chief executives and chairs of some of the largest organisations in the country, have signed up to take part but even this is not enough to match the overwhelming demand from schools, which is why we are appealing to you to get your employer involved. Taking part costs nothing and only requires one or two hours during the week of 18th - 22nd October. The campaign is run by the Education and Employers Taskforce, a small charity, and is supported by all the leading representative bodies for schools, colleges, teachers and employers including the CBI, FSB, IoD, BCC and UKCES. The campaign has already generated considerable local and national media interest, including from the Times, the Financial Times, radio and TV. In difficult economic times, Visit our Schools and Colleges offers the opportunity to celebrate what employers are already doing for young people – be it through careers advice, work experience, mentoring, governors or a range of other activities – and to inspire many more to follow their lead. Whether you have existing links with education or would like to engage for the first time, you can
sign up to visit a local school here

Women & ICTs Through The Lifecycle, an international conference in Barcelona - 8th to 10th November 2010
Women's under-representation in ICT studies and careers has been the subject of sustained academic research and policy effort in most advanced economies for nearly three decades. Despite this, women remain a minority of students and professionals in ICTs and even this small presence seems to be diminishing. It is therefore a good time to re-examine the reasons for women's minority status and to reconsider the frameworks we use to explain this. This conference offers a valuable opportunity to re-examine the range of factors that affect women's participation in ICT studies and careers from an international comparative perspective. It takes the lifecycle as the organising framework for the analysis presented in the conference sessions, dealing with the different phases of education and then those of employment, during which women engage with, and disengage from, ICT education and work. This framework is designed to allow participants to examine these different issues, and their possible cumulative effect. The conference also offers an opportunity for participants to consider the similarities and differences in patterns of women's representation between countries, to compare the measures taken to tackle problem areas, and to consider what still needs to be done. Research from several different countries and disciplines will be presented, and our aim is to advance our comparative understanding of the problem and its possible remedies. The conference is organised by the Gender and Information Technology Programme, Internet Interdisciplinary Institute, Open University of Catalonia, Barcelona and the working language of the conference is English. The conference is open to all to attend and there is no charge. Further information about the conference and the provisional programme
can be found here
