As the IT profession is very broad, there are many different options to consider when choosing a career in IT.

Research and Development : Also known as R&D, blue sky research

The Research and Development job description:

  • Research and Development refers to the study of the future of the industry - companies do this to design new technologies that could possibly hit the IT market. Companies, universities and government agencies usually have dedicated centres of people who work in R&D and spend a significant amount of time undertaking academic research in laboratories.
  • Manages approved projects through to completion.
  • Identifies and reviews new and emerging technologies to provide a portfolio of ideas for the development of new products for clients.
  • Manages, develops and implements testing and evaluation programmes for any technology developed to ensure that products are compliant with legislation and appropriate standards for the markets in which they operate.


Skills needed for Research and Development may be:

  • Strong academic background and qualifications (degrees in science, engineering, technology, or related field to the subject being researched).
  • High-level engineering knowledge.
  • Capable of writing and understanding complex algorithms and developing computer code to implement the technology.
  • Innovative with strong analytical skills
