"...I set myself a goal and work hard to reach it. Most importantly you need to believe in yourself!"

I am currently the Service Desk Supervisor/ Engineer for Lucidica and have been in my current position for nearly 4 years. I’ve been working in IT for about 5 years, since I was accepted for an MCSE course.

From a young age, I was always fixing things at home. If the TV or something with wires wasn’t working, I’d be the one fixing it.  When I was growing up I didn’t have a PC at home or at school, so I think I’ve come a long way since starting out just 5 years ago!

I moved to the UK and started looking at different courses. I started a BA fares and ticketing course, followed by a Hairdressing course, before receiving the great news that I’d been accepted for the MCSE course. It was during this course that I realised how serious I was with gaining the correct qualifications and getting a career in IT.

What I love most about working in IT is that I learn something new every day, you can never stop learning in IT. There are constant updates, upgrades, and conflicts of programmes that catch you unawares. It’s a great feeling to resolve an issue through a process of elimination which you weren’t even aware of the root cause when you started out fixing it!

I think for people wanting to pursue a career in IT, you need to remember that you will need to study. Getting the right qualifications is the basic requirement - it can also be difficult to gain the right experience; more and more often employer’s want people with the experience to match their qualifications. If you struggle, you should look for apprenticeship programmes or work experience placements to help you along you way. Lucidica is one of these exceptions as they give people a chance as long the person has the dedication and passion for anything technical.  They will support your learning development whilst offering a full-time paid job.

In order for me to succeed in my role as a Service Desk Supervisor I set myself a goal and work hard to reach it. Most importantly you need to believe in yourself!

I’ve never seen any obvious differences between what men and women have to offer in IT, and I'm certainly not aware of any preconceptions - maybe just that women see IT as a man’s job.  At Lucidica out of a team of 8 engineers, 4 of us are women, which I think is a very encouraging figure.
