As the IT profession is very broad, there are many different options to consider when choosing a career in IT.

The IT/Information Security Consultant job description:

  • Oversees security systems for the identification and mitigation of IT threats.
  • Assists with the design and development of key risk indicators and risk reporting formats.
  • Gathers and defines business requirements and processes for an assigned project through conducting meetings with business users.
  • Understands encryption, certification and key management.
  • Analyses process flows, develops use cases, validates and documents research findings for management review. Creates a repository for requirements documents.
  • Provides assistance to the implementation efforts by identifying potential issues and changes in workflow.
  • Develops and executes technology deployment plans including creating manuals and training business users on new or enhanced technology solutions.


Skills a IT/Information Security Consultant may have are:

  • Knowledge of penetration testing, VPN, firewalls, Checkpoint and networking including Cisco and/or Juniper Netscreen product sets.
  • Authentication skills both with regards to RSA and Internet Servers.
  • Internet messaging experience is also key including exposure to some of the following: Mimesweeper, Mailsweeper, Surfcontrol, Websence, Bluecoat, Messagelabs.
  • Knowledge of Internet Proxy service.
  • Knowledge of computer forensics.
  • PKI (public key infrastructure) and IPSec (IP security) certificates
