6 - Speakers in the Bournemouth area?
Is anyone in the Bournemouth area?
The Head of ICT at Avonbourne School, Kathryn Loughnan, has been in touch with me over the weekend.

11 - The 2009 IoD Women as Leaders Conference - Wednesday 4th November 2009
• Pressures in the work place are increasing
• Career advancement has taken a back seat
• The debate over board diversity is in all the press
Hear from, and question, some of the UK’s leading business women who are leading on an international scale including:
Helen Alexander CBE - Meet the lady that grew the Economist’s profits by 75 per cent in just five years...
ShááWasmund - Pitch questions to the woman that put Dyson vacuum cleaners on the map...
Jacqueline Gold - Hear from the lady responsible for Anne Summers gross annual sales of over £150m...
There have recently been a number of real success stories for women in business. Studies show that there has been an increase in women CEOs to five in the FTSE 100, with an additional three more divisional or regional CEO posts held by women. Alongside this, female entrepreneurship is also on the up with more than one million self-employed women in the UK. Despite these positive statistics though, the gap between females and males in the business world remains stubbornly wide with serious issues needing to be resolved for women to have an equal opportunity in the work place. The IoD is a leading voice for women in business. Our female membership is growing fast and this will be the third successive major annual conference focusing solely on the issues facing women in business. This is your chance to hear personal success stories firsthand from some of the UK’s highest female achievers, and their exceptional accomplishments speak for themselves.
Cost of each booking: Members: £250 + VAT= £287.50, Non-members: £300 + VAT= £345, Fellows: £187 + VAT = £215.05, IoD Visa Gold
Card Holders: £187 + VAT = £215.05, Chartered Director: £187 + VAT = £215.05

13 - Mentoring Women for Public Life: a free development opportunity for women - starting 18th November 2009
If you are a woman in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) who is interested in progressing to a board appointment, this mentoring programme could be for you. This scheme is targeted at women who are considering applying to a SET decision-making board or advisory body, within the next two years, but who would first like to know more about what is involved and how to apply.
The UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology is for a third year working with government departments and the Commissioner for Public Appointments to offer a mentoring scheme which:
• helps women to learn more about being a member of a public board, including the level of commitment required, the potential benefits and what they can contribute
• explains the application process and what constitutes a strong application, including an interactive workshop with practical examples
• enables women to meet board members on a one to one basis to talk to them about their work in public life and their experiences of getting on a board
• provides networking opportunities for the participants and keeps them informed of public board vacancies
This third programme will be launched on the afternoon of Wednesday 18th November 2009 at Admiralty Arch, London and will run for six months unless both mentor and mentee agree to continue it for longer.
The commitment required of all participating mentees is to attend both the November launch meeting plus the final meeting on the afternoon of Thursday 22nd April 2010. Mentees can also expect to be invited to attend at least one board meeting by their mentor to find out first hand how a board operates, as well as having the support of their mentor to discuss areas such as their suitability for public life and in making applications.
The scheme is free to join and some reasonable out of pocket expenses will be paid by the UKRC for attendance by mentees of both sessions and the first board meeting.
Places on the scheme will be limited, but all women with degree-level experience and/or qualifications in any sector of science, engineering or technology, who feel ready to consider applying for public life roles within the next two years are encouraged to apply regardless of age, ethnicity and disability. Throughout the scheme mentees will be kept informed of public board vacancies. All appointments to public appointments will continue to be made on merit.
A registration form needs to be returned by 17th September 2009 - this, along with any additional information, can be requested from Jacki Mason - 01274 438910 or j.mason@ukrc4setwomen.org

14 - Role Models Needed with BTEC Qualifications in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
STEMNET has been asked by the exam board Edexcel and Pearson Education to find appropriate role models who hold BTEC qualifications (or other vocational qualifications) and who would be happy to feature in textbooks which are designed to inspire young people to study BTEC qualifications, leading them into careers in applied science and engineering. They would like to feature real people as case studies within the books, explaining in brief how they use STEM in their daily work and how they came to be where they are in their careers.
If you wouldlike to be involved in this exciting project, or get more information please contact Les Hopper at Pearson Education - les.hopper@pearson.com or 01865 314149 - their deadline is very soon though so get in touch by Wednesday 9th September - thanks!
