As the IT profession is very broad, there are many different options to consider when choosing a career in IT.

Technical Architect: Also known as Chief Designer, Chief Architect

The Technical Architect job description:

  • Provides the technical connection between the developers and the project managers.
  • Evaluates the entire project from a technical stance, guarantees that the development methods used are practical and correct. Signs off system requirements, identifies resources and estimates timelines for project completion.
  • Produces technical architectures that are dependable, modifiable and scalable.
  • Distils technical projects into discrete tasks to assist in the creation of a project plan.
  • Demonstrates strong applied knowledge of layered architectures, databases, reporting tools, middleware, security, monitoring and high availability systems.
  • Displays knowledge of business applications and technical alternatives.


Skills a Technical Architect may have are:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft, Novell, Sun and Cisco architectures.
  • Client/server, J2EE, .Net, CORBA, RPC (Remote Procedure Call).
  • Well-developed written and spoken communication and interpersonal skills at all levels.
  • Influencing skills across a wide spectrum of technical and management contacts.
  • Proven ability to drive issue resolution across diverse groups within a corporate framework.
