Finding and Accessing Mentors that Will Make the Difference

Too frequently, women do not seek out relationships with senior people as mentors – we hope they will recognise the silent hard work we have been putting in and volunteer to take us under their wing. Occasionally this happens, but more commonly this can lead to career dissatisfaction and resentment at best, and career suicide at worst.

The bad news is that the perfect mentor is unlikely to fall in your lap and that even if your employer operates a formal mentoring scheme, it is not their responsibility to make it a perfect fit.

The good news is the right mentors (yes, more than one!) are out there for you – it’s a matter of finding them and savvily cultivating a relationship. Smart women seek (and become!) mentors at every stage of their career.
