As the IT profession is very broad, there are many different options to consider when choosing a career in IT.

In this section you can see what the role of a web designer/developer includes. A Web Designer/Developer job description:

  • Builds new or redesigns existing websites.
  • Creates web designs, uses content management tools, undertakes database administration and the programming of a website.
  • They are the “Gatekeepers” of the web and they follow the guidelines created by W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) when programming anything for the internet.
  • Combines images, text and audio visual elements on a website to produce interactive content for the internet.
  • Designs web pages – produces a mock-up page in a graphics application, produces an HTML template, CSS files and all of the images needed to produce the webpage.


Skills a Web Designer/Developer may have are:

  • Knowledge of web based applications (Flash, Shockwave) or CD/DVD based products (Director, Lingo, 3-D Studio Max, After-Effects).
  • Strong programming background such as C++, J2EE, .Net, Middleware, Java Script, Action Script, .CSS, .asp, .aspx.
  • HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language), UML (Unified Modelling Language), HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), CGI (Computer Generated Imagery).
