Women Don't Ask
When Linda Babcock, a professor at a US university, asked why so many male graduate students were teaching their own courses and most female students were assigned as assistants, her dean said: "More men ask. The women just don't ask." It turns out that whether they want higher salaries or more help at home, women often find it hard to ask. Sometimes they don't know that change is possible. Sometimes they fear that asking may damage a relationship. And sometimes they don't ask because they've learned that society can react badly to women asserting their own needs and desires. Everything these days is negotiable! Every relationship – with your hairdresser, accountant, car mechanic, partner, sibling, child or parent, boss, peer or direct report – is made up of daily, weekly and yearly negotiations. Therefore, learning how to negotiate effectively is a core life skill. You will learn:
- Why it's necessary for women to negotiate successfully now more than ever before
- How to manage any emotional upset they may have over issues including promoting self and meritocracy versus (nepotism), class privilege, cronyism and political savvy
- How to identify the common stumbling blocks that women encounter and how to pay attention to acts of self-sabotage
- How assess your current negotiating style strengths and weaknesses
- How to negotiate solutions that are mutually beneficial
