Thank you so much to everyone who came along to the 'Women of Substance: Inspiring Women in STEM'' event which we co-hosted with The European Professional Women's Network and the Women's Engineering Society on Wednesday 27th January in the beautiful surroundings of the Royal Institution.
I would like to pass on our thanks to our keynote speaker Lynda Armstrong, Technical Vice President at Shell and our panellists Christine Ashton Group Strategy Director for Transport for London, Julie Greensmith Lecturer in the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham and
Bee Thakore, Founder of Big on Good Solutions.
Our four speakers were authentic, engaging and inspiring! From Lynda's stories about working in the oil industry for 30 years we learned that masculine industries often welcome a different (a woman's) perspective, and that we can use the fact that we are women in a masculine field to our advantage. From Christine, we learned the role that oxytocin can play and how important it is to manage peer relationships. From Julie, we learned that men think STEM women are better 'geek managers' than geeks! And from Bee, we learned the importance of asking questions and not being afraid to talk to everyone about your passion. Ask enough questions and you can become the first female private space pilot! In response to questions asked, the panel agreed that you shouldn't change to fit in with men or women, that it is okay to accept positive actions if it is in the form of a scholarship or fellowship and finally it is important to seek out mentors so don't be shy to ask. We would also like to thank the Royal Institution for hosting the event, and to Tess Barnes for allowing us to display a selection of paintings from her solo exhibition ‘Women of Substance’.
Final thanks go to everyone who attended and who continue to support womenintechnology.co.uk. We would very much like to hear your feedback from the event so if you have any comments good or bad please email us at info@womenin.co.uk.
